Dennis Heimdal with the State Hygenic Lab at University of Iowa/Lakeside Lab presented a program on Water Quality in the Iowa Great Lakes at Rotary on Wednesday, Febraury 16.

Dennis began his progran with some information about Lakeside Lab, which is home to one of the State Hygenic Labs in Waitt Lab and Water Quality Testing in the area. Lakeside Lab is located on 147 acre campus located on the west side of West Lake Okoboji. Eleven of its 37 buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The local lab is certified for testing surface water, drinking water and waste water through chemical, bacterial and physical testing methods. Through grants to counties program, free private well testing is offered to all Iowa residents through the lab. The lab also provides student mentorships and leads the Cooperative Lakes Area Montitoring Project (CLAMP). Student mentorships provide field experience and testing opportunities for students. The CLAMP program monitors levels of algae, nutrients and water clarity. Volunteers take samples 2 times a month from June to August in all of the Iowa Great Lakes.
