Jason Mortse, leader of the Lakes Area Rope Rescue Team, was the featured program of the March 31 Rotary noon meeting.
 
The Rope Rescue Team is a partnership between the Spirit Lake Fire Department and the Superior First Department that arose from a need ILCC saw with its wind energy program. The program was design though for multiple needs, including high rescues for wind turbines and water towers, and also for confined spaces below grade like grain bins and ravine rescues.

The team consists of ten trained members - 2 paramedics, a first responder and 7 general knowledge resucers. The groups has been actively training for 8 months and will respond to emergency needs in the entire county and will branch out in the future to needs in a one hour radius.

Each time the team is utilized, a five member team assists the resucer that goes "over the edge". Jason the showed us the equipment the team uses - rapelling harnesses, 2 lines (safety & repel line each rated for 9,000 pounds), lighted helmets, carabeeners (10,000 pound rating), tubular webbing (1,000 pound rating), pick off harnesses, edge protection and bear paws.
