Norm Johnson from the YMCA was the guest speaker at the regular noon meeting of the Iowa Great Lakes Rotary on Wednesday, January 13.
 
Norm began his program by answer health-related questions from the audience, then share some interesting statistics about the Y: - Norm has been with the YMCA organization for 13 years, the last 3.5 have been here in Spirit Lake - Current membership at the Y is 4,200 (25% of the community) - Camp Foster was chartered in 1912 and will be celebrating its centennial in 2012 - Bedell Family YMCA is celebrating its 5 year anniversary this month - There are 2800+ Y's across the US and in 123 countries - All YMCA's are locally governed and independent with a volunteer board of directors - Highlights of 2009 included the completion of a 10,000 sq ft riding arena at Camp Foster, over 200 kids at the Burn Camp, over 1500 kids at residence camps and another 700 kids at day camps, partnership with Spirit of America teaching kids about watercraft and the lakes - The YMCA is the largest coordinator of youth sports and swimming lessons Norm also shared a couple exciting things to watch for in 2010. Those include the new F.A.N. (Fitness, Attitude and Nutrition) camp and Kinship becoming a YMCA program.
