Bret Hetland and Brian Sudbrink spoke to Rotary at its regular meeting on Wednesday, March 17, about the proposed multi-purpose ice facility.

The "rink of dreams" is the vision of community volunteers for a multi-purpose ice and recreation center to be built in Spirit Lake. The center would be open year round and would facilitate the hosting of ice and tournament related activities in the area.

The 34,000 square foot facility woul provide more options for the community as well when it comes to training for spring/summer sports. For example, in a year like this, soccer and golf teams from local high schools could use the facility to begin practices when there is still snow on the ground. The group has also proposed 8-10 youth hockey tournaments in the winter months which are expected to bring approximately 1700 visitors to the region, utilizing 1,000 hotel nights and 6,500 meals in area restaurants.

The facility would be built on land adjacent to the YMCA through a land swap deal with the Y. Funding for the facility is primarily through sponsorships and private donations. The facility would be operated independently.
