Dr. David Smith, superintendent of Spirit Lake schools, spoke to Iowa Great Lakes Rotary at their regular noon meeting on Wednesday, October 27. David shared an overview of what the school has been doing with budgeting, facilities, 1 to 1 Initiative, teaching and learning, student achievement and activities.

- Budget: Spirit Lake has focused on priorities over the past two years and have made some cuts and spending adjustments resulting in a higher unspent budget than plan for the next five years
- Facilities: Minor facelifts have been recently completed to make the exterior a little more warm and welcoming. The small wind turbine is currently awaiting parts to fix it which should happen within the next couple of weeks.
- 1 to 1 Initiative: The laptop initiative has been implemented and is going well. Enrollment is up and there are currently almost 1200 computers deployed to level the learning playing field.
- Teaching and Learning: Focusing on teacher collaboration and collaboration between the school and community to enhance local economic development.
- Student Achievement: Test scores remain good and there has been an increased focus on student responsibility.
- Activities: Exciting things have been happening with many activities at Spirit Lake including making the football playoffs for the first time in 22 years, boys and girls cross country both going to state, and the band bringing home numerous weekend marching competition awards.
